Oregon Disability Claim FAQs

How many disability hearing offices does Oregon have?

Oregon is served by two hearing offices, one in Portland and one in Eugene. Which one hears your case depends on which SSA field office covers your address, and interestingly, claimants in the Pendleton area are actually routed to the hearing office in Spokane, Washington rather than either Oregon office.

How long does it take to get a disability hearing in Oregon?

Oregon’s wait times have historically run longer than the national average, sometimes well over a year. Approval rates and processing times also vary noticeably between the Portland and Eugene offices, so your experience can depend partly on which one is assigned to your case.

Does Oregon tax Social Security disability benefits?

No. Oregon doesn’t tax SSDI or SSI payments at the state level, which is worth knowing if you’re budgeting around an approved claim. Keep in mind the federal government may still tax a portion of SSDI income depending on your overall earnings, though SSI is never federally taxed.

Why do Oregon disability claims get denied?

The most common issues are incomplete or inconsistent medical evidence, treatment gaps, insufficient work credits for SSDI, or income and resource limits being exceeded for SSI. Oregon’s initial denial rate tracks closely with the national average, so a first denial isn’t unusual and isn’t a reflection of whether your claim has merit.

What medical conditions qualify for disability in Oregon?

There’s no fixed list of automatically qualifying diagnoses. The SSA evaluates how much a condition, physical or mental, limits your ability to sustain full-time work, and that standard applies the same way in Oregon as anywhere else.

Should I reapply or appeal after being denied in Oregon?

Appealing is almost always the better option. A new application resets your filing date and can cost you back pay tied to your original claim, while reconsideration or a hearing keeps that original date intact.

Is it worth hiring a disability attorney in Oregon?

Given how much Oregon’s approval rates and wait times can vary between the Portland and Eugene hearing offices, having an attorney who understands the tendencies of your assigned office can meaningfully help. Our attorneys only get paid if you win, so there’s no upfront cost.

How much does an Oregon disability lawyer cost?

Nothing upfront. Our fee is contingency-based, taken only from your back pay if your claim is approved, and capped according to SSA rules. If we don’t win, you owe nothing.
